My name is Patricia, and I am often called either "Tricia" or "Trisha" (they do sound a like, after all). I consider "Tricia" to be my nickname, but they're certainly both perfectly valid given names on their own.

It can actually be both - some Patricias prefer Tricia, but it can just be Tricia.

I once met a girl named Tricia, who said her parents gave her that name and not Patricia, so that she wouldn't be called Patty.

Not among the most scintillating of questions, as it could apply to virtually any nickname.
I can't add anything to the above, but, as an aside, I would surmise that young children had difficulty pronouncing the first syllable along with the others, so, naturally, they would say, "Trisha" (or any spelling derivation, thereof), and, thus, the partial name became as good as its original. Quite frankly, though, I don't think I know anybody who was listed as "Trisha" (or any other spelling) on their birth certificate.
Of course, the name could be shortened to "Trish", and, if you're really friendly with that person, I'm sure they'd let you call them "Tri" or even "Tr". Of course, "Mr T" owns the single letter! ;)

It's short for Patricia, and also used alone for a name.

The origin of the name is an abbreviation of Patricia. But is is now also considered its own "stand alone" name.
