those who believe it isnt, would you care to explain yourselves?? i know some countries have declining populations, however, these arent many (and they're all industrialized nations)... ..why ignore the rest of the world?? our FINITE resources and LIMITED space arent going to keep up with the growing population! its hard for me to believe many people still think excessive population growth isnt a problem...some growth is good, but not too much.

so can anyone explain why some people think population growth isnt a problem when its excessive????

Des Ta...you may be right, people in industrialized nations DO have much more impact than people from poor countries. however, who said all the population growth from poor countries doesnt make a huge impact as well?? they need to clear land for their people too! and since they are more on poverty, with desparation, they are much less likely to have concern of which delicate resources they use to survive! how do they expect to have a better quality of life if they have to make room for more?? the excessive population growth (or at least most of it) is IN these developing nations. and why do their populations keep rapidly growing?? because of the lack of education! if the excessive growth going on in developing nations werent a problem, then the whole point would be missed about this being a problem and i would just shut up!!

The Earth is a self correcting system. One or two good world wars or a nice pandemic virus will solve the population problem nicely.

I am hearing many alarmist views here. If population needed to be controlled, it would be. The government would just have to step in like they do in some Asian countries, for example. They don't say you can only have one child, but they make more than one child very expensive. This of course only happens in very overpopulated areas. Some of you here and very spiteful towards women with large families, I wonder what you would think if you took a road trip through our country and saw all our empty space. I did just last year. If you're living on the coast or in a city, natually there will be lots of people. Try to be more open minded towards mothers, they have enough problems trying to stay happy with their choice of working or staying home in today's world. Look closely at yourselves because sometimes being so defensive is a signal that you're feeling insecure. Maybe you're in a place in your life right now where you can't appreciate the joy of a child, but it doesn't mean you have to spew hatred. Look inside- do you get annoyed with children, or maybe you can't afford that many children, or you're not married and would like to be so you could have some, or your lousy job needs your attention at the moment- whatever the case may be, everybody chill out here. The human population isn't excessively growing if you read the stats, and if we don't have a replacement generation when we're elderly, we're all goners way before our time. Right now our economy is about to take a major blow because our population is mostly becoming elderly, the baby boomers that is. We will be very strained by this and the younger people (us) are going to have to get us through it.

You know where I stand (and it AIN'T in the maternity ward). I certainly can't understand why it's so indescribably glorious for so many of these people to walk right out in public with half a dozen urchins-in-tow, one on the way, a couple more workin' up a shoulder-barf for Mom. Have they no shame? No common sense?

Edit: to LP

I don't see hatred here but I do see logic which can come across as a cold emotion. In fact, logic is the absence of emotion and intentionally so. Emotion is the enemy of decision-making and long-termism. Emotion is for NOW. Logic considers now AND the future.

There is nothing among these answers that should be interpreted as anything other than frustration. We watch people who leave the water running all day and are concerned. Women who have several children - especially at a very young age - are creating a quagmire that we must ALL deal with.

That land you see between towns is empty for a reason: People work together. It's a little difficult to sweep a floor in L.A. if your body is in Fudd's Hiney, CA. So we move in close.

And, is the land really important? So we could build houses there and businesses. Where will affordable food come from? Have you noticed what the energy-crunch has already done to corn prices and everything related to corn? Like beef, milk, etc. Petroleum has become so expensive (over $90/barrel now) that ethanol from corn is competitive. So ethanol plants are buying up corn and paying a premium for it.

Corn goes up, cows have to eat it so their diet is now gourmet-priced. Beef and milk go through the roof. If the world population slowly dropped by attrition to about a billion people worldwide (and that's almost FOUR TIMES what nature ever permitted) the food supply and petroleum that keeps it alive would last us a while.

These irresponsible, live-for-today, to-heck-with-the-future, walking baby factories are seen for exactly what they really are: irresponsible.

I agree with you that it has played a major role in population growth. I have often thought about the very fact of the limitations of the areas of land mass on the planet and what would happen if the religions insisting on "being fruitful and multiplying" didn't reevaluate the situation when and if there simply was not enough land, food, or water to keep growing at an unbridled rate. Eventually, reality would have to take over and then the religionist would have to once again listen to God's great guidance in updated mode. God would never want us to overpopulate to the point of further poverty, sickness and retardation. In places where overpopulation has happened, it is a great tragedy to keep believing you have to make babies like a factory without intelligent control and care; lovingly though, not brutally and in a barbaric manner. I believe what God wants is for all people to intelligently and lovingly think very seriously and carefully about making babies before they do, and the first question is "will you be able to take really good care of his children?"

I blame the Catholics. At least the Chinese have a policy in place to control their population growth, even if it is a bit drastic. Catholicism may be OK for developed nations but not in corrupt 3rd world countries who are frequently in drought and at war with themselves.

As for the countryside being paved over, that has more to do with policy than population growth, and well-to-do types not wanting to live in town centres any more. There are plenty of brown-field sites that could be used for new housing developments.

well, the over populated areas have one thing missing: education. Like you already said, an educated populace will create the kinds of economic conditions that would make supporting large families difficult - (like in industrialized nations).

By the way, it is INDUSTRIALIZED nations that are zapping resources. Not poor nations nor overpopulated ones. The resources that ONE American uses daily is nowhere near what 10 Indians use on a daily basis. This ridiculous myth must end.

Its a vicious circle, more resources are needed so then deforestation needs to be done to get and sell wood, then the land where the trees have been becomes poor so we cant use that, so then we have 2 look elsewhere and deforest somewhere else!!

fact; somewhere in the world every day a forest the size of wales is being destroyed!!

As far as I know, there is only one country that is declining in population with any significance and that is Japan.
Everyone else is pushing the limits of sustainability. Just look at smaller countries. What is the one thing that almost ALL of the them have in common? Overpopulation, joblessness, poverty, poor water and food quality.
Its only a mater of time before the same thing starts happening to larger countries. (Its already happening in India.)

Idiocy.

Lots of people like to pretend that there are no global problems because it makes them feel better. It is the same with climate change.
