Software piracy is when you share, sell, or otherwise distribute copyrighted material without the owner's permission.

The reason this is illegal is because it deprives the lawful owner of revenue and infringes on his right to be the sole distributor of his work.

Let's say you worked hard to make a new video game. You copyright that game assuming that you now have control of its distribution and can realise some compensation for all your hard work.

Now, how would you like it if suddenly people were getting your game for free and you couldn't do anything about it? Making piracy illegal helps prevent that from happening.

Software piracy is making illegal copies of software, particularly when you intend to sell the copies.

It is illegal because it is stealing. The software is a product of the software company or independent author that wrote the software.

You do not buy software, you buy a license to use software.

I believe it is when you take a copyrighted CD, like a game for instance, and make a copy and then sell it. Both selling it and giving it to someone is illegally because the people who created it worked a long time to come up with it and expect to be paid for their product. It would be like you working at your job and then your boss not paying you.

Most of the above is accurate, but not all copying of copyrighted material is illegal. There are examptions called "Fair Use".

It is also not the case that all software is licensed and not purchased. usually for consumer software, but not always.

Copyrighted materials are protected. If you don't own it, it is illegal to copy it. Same as sports programs on TV.
