do you go to see what you can do to help?
do you just say you're glad it wasn't you?
do you contribute financially to any local fund to assist those who lost everything?

To those of you who are volunteer fire fighters, EMTs, with Red Cross, etc., thank you for what you do!

I charge right over & jump in head first-so to speak.
I am NO stranger to disasters and have taken many classes via. FEMA, ARC, & USCG, then have put those same skills to use in the field-usually thanks to hurricanes.
There have even been times when my own a** was at risk because of falling timbers etc. that were unexpected.
I stay for the whole thing, even cleanup and do what I can to help the folks that have had the disaster.
Then I pray it doesn't happen to anyone else, including me.

We don't get the usual type disasters in my area - e.g., flooding; hurricanes; mudslides; horrible snow storms....but if we did yes, I would check with my neighbors and with my older friends and my kids...and I would try to help with anyone who needed it. If I could I would contribute financially, otherwise with my time.

9/11 was our greatest disaster and tons of people tried to assist, even to the point where folk were asked to 'slow it down' a bit.

My former hubby is in the upper eschelons of the homeland security office in the District and gives us good advice on how best to help and I have another close friend who is with the American Red Cross.

Homelessness is our biggest 'disaster' at present and has been for years and years. Until I left government I served as the State Coordinator of homeless programs and witnessed and helped 1:1 with more human disaster than one could imagine. One of the reasons I no longer work in the field was that very devastation. Heart just couldn't take it any longer as I am one who can't leave it at the office and it was taking its toll.

I have been with American Red Cross for 15 years as of last August. I am a local and a national volunteer. If it is here, then I go, if a major event is happening, I am part of Charleston County Emergency Operations Center liaison with Red Cross. I am personally involved and I do contribute financially as well If it is a national event, headquarters in DC sends me out to the affected areas to help either in client casework, sheltering, mass feeding or as an emergency response vehicle driver.
I am ALWAYS honored to be able to help someone in a crisis situation.

I will admit that I do say "I'm glad it wasn't me", but I will do anything I can to help out. I live in a close knit community where almost all the neighbors get together and help each other out. As far as contributing financially.... I don't have much to spare, but I will do what I can. They say ... what comes around, goes around. I don't want something bad coming back to bite me in the behind.

When a disaster strikes anybody any were, you should first of all sick for God's protection, pray for those affected, and provide any possible assistance to those affected directly or through local fund, and be conscious of your safety while rendering such help or offering any type of assistance

I guess I am selfish and say I am glad it did not happen to me, but I am thankful that it did not happen to me and I do feel bad for those that are going through the disaster.......

I am always one that will give to others.....If I have it and someone needs it, I do not mind giving.....I do go and see what I can do to help out......If it is cleaning up a mess, making some food or donating some $$$.......I do not have much, but I do not mind sharing what I have......

Former EMT, I see what I can do to help. I've donated to those who lost everything as I know how that feels (had a house fire before, lost almost everything).

I volunteer my boyfriend to cut up the downed trees and help him with the clean up.
Last year we helped 5 neighbors after a windstorm three we hadn't met one lived pretty far but one of the one's we hadn't met asked us to help them.
We have a home heated with a woodstove so will offer to have company for a cup of tea in a power outage.
I don't help with money because I don't know if they have insurance or savings to help with that but might if they asked.

Fortunately I havent been in that situation. If I was I would go help immediately. I know how it feels.
The one time I was in a disaster I was 17 and one of the victims. My family got evacuated.
