They are 2 completely different formats offering 'basically' the same benifits. Blu-ray will ONLY play on blu-ray compatable players and HD-dvd will ONLY play on HD-dvd compatable players. ;)

there are two major differences between the 2 formats. 1) Blu ray if the only format that uses 1080p resolution, and 2) bluray hold about twice as much data per layer (25GB) HD-DVD holds about 10GB
