34, 38, and 39. You cannot combine numbers like 12+34=36. Each number is used by itself. I figured out all 1-40, except these 3. Thanks. Can only use +, - , *, and /.

for example, you can use exponents too. (4^2)+1+3=20. Exponents are ok, not factorial, eg.

Thanks so far for the quick responses! However, I do not think decimal places are allowed, I will ask. Let's assume not. If they are, I have all 3 I needed, but I do not think they are.

Zaphod is best so far, but used decimals. Try NOT using decimals.

Can you use a decimal point?
(And I bet you used parentheses somewhere too.)

39 = 4/.1 - 3 + 2
38 = 3/.1 + 2*4
34 = 4/.1 - 3*2

Actually, this isn't cheating, as you said I could use /.
which I did (a slash followed by a period)

I don't see how it is possible. Using ONLY 1,2,3,4 ONCE and ONLY +, -, *, /, the largest number we can obtain is (4+1) * 3 * 2 which is only 30. Something is missing in your description of the question.

34=3/.(2-1)+4
that is
2-1=1
.1=1/10
3/(1/10)=30
30+4=34

Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be possible.
