1. They are not spayed.
2. They are not killed by "shelters". It's better to let them live alone, than to shelter (=kill them).
3. They are well fed. In my neighbourhood, in every block of flats there is one person regularly feeding the stray cats. All a cat needs to do if hungry is to stand outside my building, and she will receive food. And if she is sick we do take them to the vet.
I am not saying that cats should be stray, or that they shouldn't be spayed, or that they live long happy lives (some do, but many die of accidents and diseases). But it is better to take care of them as best as we can, than to be blind to the problem by not having them around in the streets, just because they are being put down in a "shelter".

This is a kind of question that many people are asking of.. I don't believe that the Greek people do not care for the stray cats or dogs , as many of them are trying to take care of them..But there are other problems needing to be solved first in order to take care of this one too. Animal shelters.. They may exist.. at least a few of them..But propably they aren't enough. And I believe that the Greece, unfortunately, isn't well organized to face this and so many other problems that do exist..

I have wondered about that too, most of the cats are wild. I´ve found out that the Greek are not very fond of cats or dogs for that matter. There are many stray dogs too. I´m not saying that all Greeks don´t like cats or dogs, sorry Greeks, but when visiting Greece you get the impression that dogs and cats are not so important for a Greek person. Hope I´m wrong!

Simply Greek cats have an elevated libido and therefore reproduce more kittens, that become cats with an elevated Mediterranean libido and on it goes.

It happens that I work with animals everyday. So allow me to be a bit sensitive and perhaps emotional on this issue.
The problem is not really with the stray cats in Greece. Why no one ever applies the same rational to the...birds??. The problem is with all animals. And I would even go as far as to mention the environment of Greece in general.
That is, I could see a situation where the country would be clean, green and environmentally healthy but their cats would still be able to move freely (while a public body could take care to control their numbers through various animal-friendly means and not through...spaying).
Is this possible or utopia?
In fact, this is the case with rabbits in Holland. They multiply by the thousands, they live free all over the country and everywhere and no one is really bothered. Why would they? What's wrong with having animals around you? I see nothing wrong when everything else works. Feeding stations, public animal clinics, trained personnel and facilities...
But is that the case in Greece?
Hardly....
To Manisalibo: My apologies for that. It was inappropriate. I deleted it. Indeed, I could not really explain it.
To Ipek: You got a point. But I did not mean to accuse the Turks for Greeks' bad habits.

unfortunately, there is a lack of education in Greece, and Greece is among the countries which dont protect so much the animals.Just the individual initiative, thats all.
Many times Greece has been he target of other countries, due to the lack of consciousness towards the animals. It is true, and it is sad..They take a dog and then after the fun their kids have with it, they throw it to the street becaus eit gives them responsibility
The shelters are full, but they have no means to survive, and just the private initiative is not enough at all...
I am ashamed of this situation, and as individual i try always to help, firs by having animals in my house, and second by having in my car always food for the stray cats and dogs
