The only thing i have found is an associates degree in mortuary science. would i be able to use that to become a medical examiner at least?, which means a public officer who conducts autopsies on bodies to find the cause of death.

A coroner does not have to be a physician, but a medical examineer does have to be a pathologist. A non-physician coroner is rare.

Obviously, forensic pathology is a subspecialty of pathology. This site gives a fairly good overview of the pathology field: http://www.abms.org/Who_We_Help/Consumers/specialties.aspx

but a coroner can be an elected office or a mortician in some places.

The criteria is different in different places. Some places require a medical degree, some don't require any (in some places it is a political post and the ME doesn't actually examine bodies).
Check your local requirements.

You must go to Med. School to become a medical examiner, and your degree must be in Pathology

yea an associates degree would be great to start, but a biology degree with emphasis on human biology would probably also be a really good idea. there are also bachelor's degrees you can get in forensics that would also be great for the career. you'd probably also need to get an internship or an apprenticeship at a hospital or in a morgue.
