What are you searching for? Service record? You may wish to contact the Department of veteran Affairs. They in turn can turn you onto whoever would maintain this information which would be either the Department of defense or the Army. All copies of DD214's (your discharge papers although in WW2 it was called something else but they'll know what you mean) are kept on file.

Good luck

Actually, you can find out quite a bit if you know what unit he was in. And a good way to find that out is to look at any correspondence your family may have saved and check the return addresses or addresses on letters to him. You can also look at his uniform and pins and service bars.

I have a pack of letters my grandfather sent my mom when she was a little girl and he was sent off to Belgium with the 38th Armored Infantry Battalion of the 7th Army. There are lots of books that tell the order of battle and where units were during those battles. Simply typing in the unit on an internet search will glean you lots of info.

One thing, there is a limit to how much information they will give you on a service record unless you have your granddad's next of kin signature on the request.

Good Luck!
