Just wondering about a couple prefixes in my homework. There is one referring to sec sec-butyl chloride. there is also t-amyl iodide and n-butyl bromide. Just wondering what those prefixes mean, I tried looking them up in the book but really didn't see anything. If someone could please answer what each of those prefixes mean it would be greatly appreciated.

Prefixes indicate normal, secondary & tertiary as Carborane rightly says.

t- means the carbon is tertiary
if you look the carbon atom bonded to iodide in t-amyl iodide, you will see 3 carbon atoms bonded to it, so it is tertiary

s- means the carbon is secondary
if you look the carbon atom bonded to chloride in s-butyl chlorde, you will see 2 carbon atoms bonded to it, so it is secondary

then there is iso- means the 2nd to the last carbon in the branch is secondary

n- normal, it is a straight chain
so you see in n-butyl bromide. the carbon bonded to bromide has a long chain carbon tag along, there is no branch in the chain.
