It is a common but not terribly expensive problem that occurs on a lot of Ford product. If you are handy, you can even fix it yourself.

The brake pedal has a transmission interlock switch attached to the pedal arm several inches above the pedal. When it is operational it senses your foot is on the brake serving as a safety feature to prevent you from engaging the transmission and rolling away unexpectedly. When the switch fails, it does not send the signal that the brake is engaged, and so the transmission assumes it is not, and refuses to allow you to shift into gear.

Replacing the switch is not difficult, nor is the switch expensive to have replaced. However, in the interim there is a work-around provided in the owners manual so that you will not find yourself stranded by it. As I recall, in that car, with the engine off you shift into neutral. Then you are able to start the car and shift from there.

I'm not sure about that vehicle but alot of vehicles have a shift interlock. If yours does at the base of the shifter there will be a small "doorway" covered. Take out the cover and there is usually a manual lever to pull and reset.

Make sure the key is on, you may have to move it slightly, press the brake pedal and then move the shifter around.

Sounds like the switch for the brake pedal is either out of calibration or broke.

Do you have brake lights?
Bad fuse?
Bad brake pedal switch?
Dead battery?

I assume it starts and runs OK....?
