The lines are called "strata." They form as different layers of sediment are deposited on the land. Think of it like a layer cake. You have lots of different layers made up of sediments that are all slightly different. The layering of these sediments or rocks is called stratification. These layers can be used to look at fossils and the composition of the soil at various times throughout history. For more info on stratification, check out wikipedia.

What do you mean "lines"? Do you mean strata, or layers of different rocks? Or do you mean lines of people, or what?

If you're asking about strata, you should be try googling something like "geology of the grand canyon" and finding lots of information. Or, you might look in books at the library.

To answer this question accurately more details r required? I guess u meant strata. However in nut shell as a student of geology we all know that there r two types of layers found on our earth crust soft and hard layers the hard layer resist physical erosion and soft layers (rocks) r more readily eroded due to this a clear and conspicuous lines can be seen in any formation.

Those lines are called strata and come from rapid hydrological sorting of sediments during Noah's flood when the earth was covered with water.

I took geology in College, we took a field trip to the side of a highway in Kentucky, where we found fossils. My point is, long ago, America was a sea bed.
