Your parents, as well as mine, grew up in a different generation where school probably wasn't emphasized as much as today. Today society looks down upon people who don't go to college. It's harder to find a good job if you don't have a degree. Unless you're some sort of genius w/ street smarts or have some technical skill, you probably won't find a job over 35k/yr if you don't go to college. Go to school, even if it puts you in debt. You'll earn enough to pay back the debt in a few years easily, unless you go to a private school; that'll take a few more years to pay off. Also, college isn't just about learning academics, you're also learning how to grow up and learning how to manage your life and time and learning how to deal with responsibility.

First of all, be careful not to use your parents as an example. Every generation is getting more education, and a high school education now is the equivalent of a college education then, so don't expect to do as well as they did if you don't get more education than they did.
Secondly, a number of studies recently have shown that the average college graduate earns $1 million more in his/her lifetime than does the average person who did not graduate from college, so there is a significant difference in how most people do in life (there is always the odd exception, but this is true for most people).
Realize that as the world has become more and more complicated, we need to know more and more to be able to manage it reasonably well, and high school just doesn't cut it any more for most people.
College is neither a joke nor stupid. What is a joke or stupid is assuming that it is that. On the other hand, if you are satisfied with earning a minimum wage for life, worrying that your job will be sent overseas at any moment (yes, they are even looking at outsourcing the take-out window at McDonalds), then go ahead, try to make it with just a high school education in today's world.

College is something that gives you options. To be honest with you, your parents as well as mine and everyone else older than us live and got their careers started in a differant time. During these times, I know where I live at, if you do not have a degree, you cannot expect to make over $30,000 anytime soon. Its even difficualt with a degree to make that amount, not unless you major in business or accounting. Whenever I am speaking to young people, I always tell them that there is NO reason NOT to got to either a four year college or a trade school. Coming right of high school, there are not many jobs that you are going to be able to get that pays you more than $8.00 and that does not pay rent, buy clothes, pay for movie tickets, by gas for a car, get your hai done. There is something that you won't be able to buy on that type of income. Now if your parents can foot the bill for your great. College, allows you time to live free for a little while longer after high school and not be burdened with bills. Who wants to do that at 18, 19 and 20 anyways? College allows you to really have fun, meet new people, and TAKE YOUR TIME, do explore new things and possibly find out what you want to do in the long run.. Without college, you will be spending 18, 19, and 20 years old probably working a job you don't like, with low pay, and still wondering what you really want to do. Go to college, have fun, be free, try new things, take more time to prepare for life instead of jumping into it right out of high school. Even if you go to a trade school, you at least have some sort of 'training' to take to an employer to give him some reason to pay you a little more. The less education you have, the more reason they have to not pay you. (Though a job will never ever pay what you're worth). Also, college can teach you how to run a business and how to deal with people. These are the keys to making REAL money and not struggling to have a house, struggling to have a car, struggling to take care of your kids, worried about if the next paycheck is going to come in. Get more education so you can write your own check.

If you went to college you could learn proper spelling, for one thing.
Your parents grew up in a better time than ours in terms of being able to get jobs and buy homes without education. My parents didn't go to college and also owned a home, but they sold it during their divorce and now 10 years later neither of them can afford a home!
I'm job hunting right now, and you aren't going to get a job paying over $30,000 without a bachelors.
So, don't go to college. You may not be living on the streets buy you'll probably be living in your parent's basement flipping burgers and still spelling poorly.

I promise you two things; If you do not go to college now you will find it difficult later to go to college. Bad study habits are hard to break. This happened to some of my friends. Some tried later and dropped out, some never even tries, and only one completed a degree.
The second thing is that the number of unskilled or semiskilled jobs that can just be taught by doing is drying up fast. Especially the ones that pay decently.

If no one went to college our society couldn't function. The teachers that taught you through your elementary and secondary education went to college, the doctors that take care of you went to college, the engineers that designed your car and house went to college, and many other people you interact with day to day went to college. It's always good to educate yourself, and you will most likely spend a lot of time hating your job without a college education.

I agree with above poster, Kut. College isn't just academics, but a time to grow up. Besides, it wouldn't hurt if you went to college...learn how to spell and capitalize correctly.
