Religion is a poor substitute for common sense, since it opens up a bigger question than it answers. If you are going to argue that God always was, you might as well argue that people always were. Neither argument makes any sense, does it?

I suppose you're right, I've never seen it that way before, my life is a farce.

Nothing can answer if an entity or substance has always been, however, in science, it has thus far been determined that Energy cannot be destroyed, only transferred. Since we cannot fathom a beginning in the cosmological sense of the word, we can think of energy as we know it today. Hence, whether you are spiritual or not, humans can be described as energy beings - with respect to electro impulses required in order for the brain to operate, for example. Thus, we must have energy that came from where ?? No one knows. But even after a person kicks the proverbial bucket, the energy goes somewhere else. At least that is the thinking so far. Although no one really knows for sure. This is the on going debate surrounding the soul.

You are right. Religion cannot explain that. Its the job of science to explain.

You might want to check the latest Quantum Theories about the beginning of everything. The Big Bang has been replaced with a new theory which does explain "how something can be made from nothing". And provides some answers for things like "if God created everything then where did God stand while doing it".

(the theory of crossed branes)

Quantum Theory is basically causing all of the "matter and energy cannot be destroyed but only converted" answers to be looked at again since it came up with a new source and destination for both that we couldnt measure before.

That's because you and I and all people have finite minds. Everything has a beginning and an end. God did not give anyone that much sense, so old common sense can't answer that question. That doesn't prove anything, just that you can't comprehend where God came from. That's why it doesn't make sense to the human race.

Even Steven Hawkings books explain the concept of God. If you look at the universe from the point of physics, it actually does not go against the idea of a God. I believe in spirituality in life and find that the two can co-exist.

I'm rational enough to understand things like primordial soup and evolution and still comprehend how those things have a spiritual presence. I don't see why it has to be a dichotomy.

i feel you cannot have one with out the other, common sense and relegion, although their are those that go around with out it as you know. no one can give you faith it is a walk you need to take alone in both your head and heart. it sounds like you need to look into a study bible and try to find the answers. When questioning something is it not better to gather information from the source and make an educated decision. common sense is important with everthing, however what you are talking about is Faith.

Read the book of Genesis. That's where you'll find out how everything was created. As for who made God or how God came to being - that is not for us to know. God has given us His word and has given us all that we need to know. No one can answer that question as to where God came from. He has given us all that he wants us to know in His word. Just because you don't have the answer to where God came from or how He came into being, that does NOT mean that the bible/Christianity makes no sense. God's word is infallible, perfect and eternal. Man's 'common sense' can't win over the truth of God's word. Remember that we're only human and our minds are finite and knowledge is limited.

Explain the formation of life using the universe as your closed system without violating the second law of thermodynamics, I'll wait.

In answer to your second question, are you absolutely sure people were not always here?

Basically, which takes more faith? Believing in a creator or that there was no creator. Be sure to look at a picture of Monica Belucci when you answer.

This is where faith comes into play. You have to admit that "man" did not make "man" and that "man" is not and never will be capable of creating, air, sun, sky and all of the tangible things that are just here -- so reason and faith suggests that there is something bigger than "man" that created the world and the things within it -- so whatever you call it God or creator or higher power, there was before there was "man".

God created everything and is everything, I know its difficult for our little minds to grasp, but God also created nothing. Faith will help you to understand this. Faith has little to do with common sense, it is more like uncommon sense. It is simply common truth. Faith is also the opposite of fear, and without fear you can get closer to you, closer to others, closer to God, and therefore to Truth. If you seek you will find.

I believe that people us religion as a comfort and a reason for doing certain things. It something that tells them how to live, so its easier. It IS seeming a substitution for common sense. It's alot easier to do things, and to be just alive for some to know and/or think that there is a higher power watching over us. I wish I could believe that... but its just impossible for me. =S
