It couldn't. She did not have the coveted "secret" status at the time she was "outed" which is why no one was ever charged with outing her. The only crime was Libby lying about who did it - and he didn't even do it. It has nothing to do with anything but it was a chance for the liberal democrats to put a dent in the republican administration and thats all that mattered.

The head of the CIA has testified that when her name was revealed, she was a covert agent. So exposing her identity not only compromises her cover and the case she was working on (which could jeopardize national security) but it also puts her life at risk. Novak could very well have been the person who first publicized her name but the real crime was the person who leaked her name to Novak in the first place. To my mind, all evidence points towards Cheney authorizing the leak through Libby.

Whether or not Plame was active at the time, makes no difference. Outing an agent, whether they are active or not, put at risk the lives of any other cooperating asset or agents she had contact with....not to mention any operations that she participated in or were ongoing.

The affect on Plame is not as much a concern to me, as much as ....what the Bush administration is willing to do to punish anyone who doesn't help them achieve their agenda. It is just scary to think that Bush is willing to sink to that level...which amounts to treason, and can get away with it.

Even worse is the fact that we have all these people who fail to see the significance of what happened.... They will minimize the situation and spin the facts to keep their pro-Bush, small world view intact.

- Outing an agent puts that agent's life at risk.
- It similarly puts all agents that person has contacted at risk.
- An agent can be tortured, and reveal top secret information.

The general outrage over this, is that this was done without any legitimate purpose, just a back room revenge tactic by one part of the government against another part.

Everyone involved should have resigned for being part of something no needlessly petty and dangerous, all politics aside.
