I just saw a Pizza Hut commercial where the family is coming home and the mom says “Dad is making dinner” and everyone reacts like it is practically Armageddon…
They come home to find that dad had stopped at Pizza Hut and picked up food and everyone is happy!
Combine that with the “Homer Simpson” and “Peter Griffon” stereotype of the fat, stupid, incompetent, white American Male and I am wondering why no one is upset…
Almost all the sitcoms I see adds for (Since watching them makes my brain cells commit suicide) are for Nuclear Families with a stupid fat white father and the hot intelligent woman that keeps the family from falling apart.
They are ALL EXACTLY THE SAME and I don’t understand why those that see these things haven’t stood up and said “Wait a minuet… There is not a single family like that on earth so why are ALL the shows about it?”
Am I the only one left that feels that these images are detrimental to REAL American’s?

So what if the 2 shows I referenced are cartoons...
They still represent the ideas I'm trying to get across...
I don't know the names of the characters on any of the thousand other shows on the air that follow the same guide line.
The King of Queen's might as well be a cartoon for how "real" their storylines are... (I saw a few epi's at Christmas while staying with a friend.)
And as for them being made by white people... Um... Shows on BET are made by black people and I find those offensive as well for they way that they portray their culture...
The only "Black" show that I can respect is The Boondocks because at least they are portraying the negatives of the culture in an ironic way in order to get people to T H I N K.
It is all the same… Why are we sitting back and ALLOWING this when it is detrimental to our culture as a whole?
p.s. I do my best to watch nothing BUT Anime... Sub only please!

J.I.C. it isn’t obvious… When I said ‘Real Americans’ I meant Actual People as apposed to the Fictional Characters portrayed on TV.
Real, Physical, Living, People VS. Made Up Characters on the Television Screen…
I’ve lost the ability to tell when someone is being ‘Funny’ and when someone misunderstands what I wrote.

I could not agree more.
Another one that I think is bad is the Hardee's commercial that portrays men as being so stupid they can't even make a sandwich. (not sure if this one is still being played now)
The Hardee's commercials also portray women as whores and men as cheaters.

No. I don't feel insulted at all.
One of the biggest problem s in the world today is that everyone takes everything so damn seriously! There is nothing wrong with satire and if more people would recognize it for what it is and not get "offended" by every little thing a lot of our problems go away.
I recently watched the Flava Flave roast on Comedy Central and it had almost everyone represented. Black, White, Hispanic, women and they basically spent an hour doing nothing but making fun of each others racial stereotypes, body parts, etc and believe me that all went at each other with full guns blazing.
All they did was laugh at each other and at themselves and I thought to myself "Man, wouldn't it be great if as a Nation we could all get along like that!" Nobody would care who called who what, or did what, etc.
Just a people sitting around having a good time.

I see what you're saying about the commercial about Pizza Hut but those other two are just cartoons. I think they were created by White cartoonists as well. Maybe you should write them a letter and ask them?
Oh and by no way is Homer's wife hot or intelligent. Peter's wife isn't either but those are personal opinions. Women in Japanese animation are much better^^

It's all about marketing and demographics. It's fake and make-believe, so if I were to be insulted, I better learn how to change the channel. And if you think about it, let's put a real homely looking woman who isn't very intelligent with a good looking man, the odds are not many people would watch. Roseanne was the exception, not the norm.
I am not insulted because I know it's just marketing, but I obviously can't answer for all men. My suggestion to men who are insulted: change the channel.

Dad has been portrayed as stupid in sitcoms for years.
Remember the last smart father?
Was it the Brady Bunch?
It's OK, though. I mean, we're not going to hold a protest or threaten to boycott networks or scream until the ACLU does something about it.

Remember the Berstein Bears "daddy will show you what not to do". I guess American men are mature enough to be able to laugh at themselves "with' other folks. The truth is where you find it as are a few chuckles from time to time.

I don't know about all that, but I think the one Carl's Jr. patty melt commercial is hilarious with the one fat white waiter who keeps bothering the two white dudes trying to eat their burgers in a restaurant, LOL. I never laughed so hard. This fat white waiter will not leave them alone to eat their big burgers in peace and they keep looking up at him while he is rambling on and laughing with his fat black-rimmed glasses and his fat wide body like a double-wide trailer from the back VIEW!!!---about French Vanilla ice cream and how "It's not even French".
I just cannot stop laughing whenever I see that commercial! It's perfect but I never considered race until you mentioned it. They just happen to be white, but don't worry, there's many negative depictions of different races but it does seem to encompass mostly Black, White and Mexican.
You have to watch that Carl's Jr. commercial!! It is soooooooo hecka funny!!
Bye!

........ Homer Simpson and Peter Griffon are cartoons. You take things way too serious.
Your looking for reasons to be angry. All show on BET are not made by black people. Boondocks was a great show, but because it was showing negatives of black culture?

*shrug* I don't like them and don't watch them.
And yet, when they come out with an interesting show that is different from all the others available, it tends to flop horribly. (Wonderfalls, I miss you...) So networks play it safe, and reuse the same tired themes.
Is it detrimental? Not to guys. I've never seen one watch those. For women? Maybe, because it shows that loving jerks is ok, as long as they are occasionally apologetic or sweet.

No, I keep hoping my family would rather have me pick up pizza rather than having me cook.
Other than that, I really don't pay attention to stereotypes except to point them out to my kids so they know what to look for.
