YES! Craigs record here is very poor, the highest he has ever taken this club in the season is to 8th place and on one occasion,2005-2006 season in which Kevin purschased the right to fight to the top by acquiring the top stars and have no longterm plan and results. As we saw the following year our stars jumped ship and left Edmonton to go somewhere else and become a success, none the les we didn't t get what he paid for and Criag had nothing to do with this seasons success since any manager that brings in that many stars at one time is going to make a run for the top.The 2002-2003 season was the only other season where a little push was made to reach 8th place again with no success. There is no working game plan that seems to function proprely, players are going thru motions since the they are not in touch with Craigs coaching style, injuries are up because of unsure plays leaving the players open for injuiries. and turmoil seems to follow this team lately no matter where they play.WE need to clean house at the management/coaching level who can work with our future stars and have the ability to communicate to them. As fans/coaches and players we need to STOP making excuses for failure and start to demand some possitive results and work effort.

No. They are a young team that is in a rebuilding mode.

Lowe should not go either. When the ownership group hired Lowe, the GM said he would have his team in the Stanley Cup finals within 5 years, they went to the final that year. Therefore, both Lowe and McTavish have bought themselves a couple of years grace period. If they don't do well for the next couple of years, they should get some more good draft pick prospects (Tavares maybe) to go with their already exceptional young core. Only Pheonix has a younger team than the Oilers right now. If you look at teams like Detroit, Anaheim and Carolina, they are over 3 years older per player on average.
Let them rebuild. They will have their ups and downs regardless of who is coaching. Scotty Bowman couldn't get this team into the post season this year anymore than McTavish could. McTavish is probably a good guy for the younger players because he is still in touch with the game since he is not that far removed.

I think Lowe should be the one to go. He's been unable to field a consistent team. He moved Pronger for the wrong pieces of the puzzle, and when Burke got the better of that deal, pulled the Dustin Penner move which will haunt the Oilers for years.

As far as McTavish is concerned, the Oilers don't have a lot of talent and shouldn't be expected to make the playoffs. I think that Cinderella run when they made the Cup Finals raised expectations too high in Edmonton. people seem to forget they backed their way into the #8 spot that year and played over their heads - which is a tribute to the coach.

No.

I honestly think the only person who believes that the Oilers are a playoff team is Kevin Lowe himself. I also think part of the reason he got the extension is that the owners know that this team is a few years off, and based on the Vanek and Penner deals, they believe that Lowe will get the job done...similarly to what he did between 2000 and 2006.

Toe Blake with Al Arbour, Scotty Bowman, and Glen Sather as assistants couldn't make this collection of Oilers a Stanley Cup contender, so it's not fair to expect Craig MacTavish to do so.

Bob,
Kevin Lowe was hired as Oilers GM on June 9, 2000, it took him 6 years to make it to the Stanley Cup Final

No, given the team he has he should get a raise for making the playoffs. Edmonton is a very young team and will struggle at times this year. Do they have a shot at the playoffs? Yes but lets be realistic this team is going to need a couple of years to develop.

No, because they were in the Finals not too long ago. But if the Oilers don't make the playoffs in 2010, then, yeah, can him (unless his contract is up before then....which I think it is...).

maybe your expecting miracles.... give the guy a few seasons to build the team back up before giving him the Axe, I'm saying that and I don't even like the Oilers !, Look at the big picture, look at the moves that were made, moving key players, they are rebuilding the team, they have a plan, give it time to come to fruition.

No. Who else could the Oilers find dumb enough to move to the Crap hole that is Edmonton.

No. Lowe on the other hand has let a core of valuable players slip away. Small market no more- salary caps took care of that- he can't use that anymore.

Being a bit of a Flames fan I hope they keep McT and Lowe for as long as possible!
