I've been working at a retail job for almost a year. I would really, really like to quit and go back to school. If I go to school I want it to be my complete focus. I still live with my parents so I don't have to pay for housing and I can the train straight to school. However I'm not sure how to quit my job. Any ideas. I'd like to leave right after Christmas.

Hello Elizabeth C,
A good way to quit is not to. Your other positive option is to kindly resign. You write your boss a nice resignation letter telling them how much you have learned and enjoyed working there. Let them know your intentions for leaving and that you would like to give them a 2 week or better notice before exiting this job on your last day. Also, ask if they would be kind enough to give you a letter of recommendation. This will ensure that there are no hard feelings. It is never a good idea to burn a bridge with an employer that might give you a great job reference when entering the job market again. Good luck with your school and career endeavors.

The first thing that you should do, If you are going to leave working, is to tell your boss with enough time. Three weeks notice is perfectly acceptable for telling your boss. If your parents are financially sound, or above average with income, I would quit. If your parents financial situation is somewhat unclear, ask them. If you are really focused on going back to school, its your future. What ever education you get from your school it will probably help you get a better job then working in a retail job. Not always, but for the most part.

Explain to your boss that you will be going to school and wont be able to continue your employment after the end of December. Express how much you've enjoyed working there but now further education has to be your main focus. Offer to help train your replacement and be sure to ask for a written reference. They should be happy that you are willing to work through the busy holiday season and that you are giving them a long notice.

All above answers are great! Always offer notice. Giving a reason like school will guarantee that they won't be mad, and will definately give you a great reference.
An alternative would be to consider staying on for weekends! That gives you the week to concentrate on school but still get that extra money in your pocket.
