I've been living alone in a house for a while. That's how I like it.

Yea, I can. I actually prefer it that way. But in your case there are a few things you can do. The first thing I would do in your case, would to purchase a handgun. After making the purchase, you should become certified or at least have some training in how to properly and safely use it. The second step would be to have those bars placed on the outside of all your first floor windows. This should up your security immensely. The third step I would take, would be to buy yourself a dog. You should preferably invest in a dog with strong protective instincts, like a German Shepard, Belgian Sheepdog, or Belgian Tervuren. Make sure the dog has proper obedience training and provide it with plenty of love, this will ensure that you will have a friend for life and will not have to stay alone. Not to mention, that if someone were to break into your home, the dog would most likely try and help protect you. The fourth thing I would do, would be to make sure that your house is well lighted the whole way around the property, this way you would easily be able to identify someone that could be trying to break into your house. If you do these things, you should be much safer at your house alone and should feel much safer. If after all this you still find it hard to spend the night alone at your place, you might want to look into some medical help, because it could be a phobia and they have ways to try and help you work through those.

had the same feeling when I just moved out but since I had no choice, I just dealt with it one day at a time. House sharing isn't done here in Belgium and I'd never lived completely alone despite living in Ireland (in a shared house) for seven months.

Decorate your house/flat/bedroom just the way it is where you live now, read your favourite book before bed, close your eyes and you'll forget you live alone. If it's the silence that bothers you, put some music on before you go to bed, or the radio on sleep timer.

Or else, if you have the option where you live, go and live in a shared house for a while, or in a flat building (you aren't alone in the building then even if you're alone in your own place).

Just don't wait too long anymore if you kinda wanna move out, I hear the longer you wait, the scarier it gets.

I hope that helps.

It not unusual the way you feel, if you would like to change that though, you will find hypnotherapy very helpful. You need to consult an accredited Hypnotherapist, who will explain in advance the procedure and clarify any questions you may have. It would involve a number of sessions, with a process called "desensitisation". I don't whether you are in the UK, if you are, call the British Society for Clinical Hypnosis; they will recommend a therapist in your area, who should answer all your questions before you commit to treatment.

I used to be the exact same way you are. After many sleepless nights and awakening to every single sound I eventually just kind of got over it. I think I've just seen too many scary movies in the past.

There is never no one in my house, what I wouldn't give for a couple nights alone.
