The Socratic method, was to inquire in the nature of man. It is a method that teaches the student how to think. It is often the way they teach law in law school. In the film "The Paper Chase" the contract professor said, "You come here with minds of mush. You teach yourselves the law, and I teach you to think like a lawyer."
Socrates was trying to make the minds of his students think.

The first thing to notew is that Plato and socrates are to SOME extent interchangeable as socrates never actually wrote anythign but Plato wrote all fo socrates thoughts down- however even when plato is writing his own philosophies he writes as socrates.

Socrates was the godfather of modern philosophy. he taught by asking questions- he held the belief that youw ere born with all the knowlege you would ever know and that you jsut had to rediscover this knwolege. He always used a method of cross examination to expose his opponents weaknesses and hypocracies- always claiming that he himself knew nothing.

Though of course many of Socrates' philosophies have fallen by the way- many theories and ideas still exist and he is brillient as an example of HOW to argue a philosophical point. Moreper even if his ideas are outdated- it doesn;t make them any less interesting to consider.
