You could have one single skill and be successful. A safer bet is to be versatile with a wide variety of skills. You never know when one skill set may find application in some seemingly unrelated area.

One key skill would be knowledge of computer applications. Computers today are used in almost every industry. Automating human tasks invariably enjoys big payback.

The most important skill in today's economy is entrepreneurial ability. Decision making and leadership skills however, are equally important if used the right way. These skills may differ from those nessecitated in the 19th century because back then, a shrewd political mind was not as valuable, and there were less fields in the economy for one to excell in, requiring less skills than those that the numerus fields today require.
