I don't know if I should have it cut away from the medallion, or would it be better to leave it as is - and how do I find out how much it's worth ?

It may be worth it since they made it into a medallion, I don't know

The coin is circa 1950

It's going to be worth less because it's been exposed... a "proof" coin would have been worth more. As it is the coin is worth more to a collector as just the coin itself. Being in a medallian has no benefit from a collecting standpoint.

Be careful if you have it removed though. Take it to somebody who knows what the heck they are doing. It seems these days that a strong gust of wind hitting a coin the wrong way drops its value a bit. Try to keep it as perfect as possible. No scratches, dents, or dings.

Then search through some coin collecting book that you can buy at barnes and noble or books a million and see what it's worth. It might not even be worth your time if it's not in good enough condition.

Good luck

Leave it on the medallion as you will not be able to remove it without leaving tell-tale signs. As it is now you have a future family heirloom, removed you just have a damaged coin.

There were no US minted gold coins between the years 1934 and 1986. So the coin is either older than you stated, gold plated or a foreign coin. The first and last option might give the medallion some extra value but the middle option makes leaving the medallion alone your only real choice.

Enjoy your heirloom.

Go with BD in NM for there are no U.S. $5 gold coins from that period of time you stated. Since it was a problem owning or having gold coins in the 1950's in the U.S., gold coins of Mexico or other countries, made their way into jewelry. Keep it as a family item, all too often these days the sentiment of an item is over shadowed by the question "How much is it worth." Leave it together or you may cause damage also.

I would leave it as is for the time being because removing it from where it is might damage it in some way. If you're that curious it wouldn't be a bad idea to have it apraised if you find the time.

If you take it out and find out it was worth more attached you'll probably kick yourself.
