I think it may have been the smartest move Torre has ever made. The Yankees organization treated him terribly. Sure, he got paid well....but the organization has constantly bashed him all year. All Torre did is act completely professional and as a true ambassador for the orgaization at all times while leading them to 12 straight playoff appearances in a row. Thats all. And now, what does the "classless" Yankees organization do, offer him a new one year contract including a pay cut. What a "slap in the face that was". The Yankees offered him this contact with high incentives if the team did well in order to try to save their image. They want to be the "good guy" and not fire Torre which is what they truely wanted to do. So, they decide to offer him a humilating contract and of course Torre declined. All he did was lead the Yankees to four World Series Championships and 12 post season appearances.
Now, Torre can go find a job with a classy organization and finally get the respect he deserves from a team's ownership and get more then a crappy one year contract and a pay cut after serving a team so well....Best Wishes Joe Torre !

Joe Torre is a smart man who realized that the Yankees didn't really want him therefore he turned the offer down. I don't blame him at all. It's all George Steinbrenner and the whole front office and management's fault that it came to this. Joe Torre deseverved better then the treatment that he received in the end and and he is a class act.

A one year deal? I guess the Yankees don't think he can run the team. What a slap in the face. Torre should have left a long time ago.

He had the grace to see he was no longer wanted... And that his head would continue to be on a platter if he stayed.

Joe Torre's a class act and a true baseball man.

George Steinbrenner and his sons are not.

Given the pay cut in the offer and the way the owners trash-talked him during that last series, I don't blame him for declining.

I am glad he did, but really the contract was a joke. It was a way for the Yankee organization to try and look like the good guy. In reality every Yankee fan should look at it as a slap in Joe's face.

Mr. Steinbrenner insulted Joe by cutting his contract. He did that on purpose knowing he would not accept it. For him to treat Joe like that is insulting to him. I applaud Joe for turning him down. Cashman was no help either. I would not be surprised if some players left also, Like Posada, A-rod and others.

I think that he wanted a longer contract and he felt under apreaciatied by both the organization and the fans.

He's probably tired of old George and wanted to get away to a new team for a fresh start and relieve himself of all that Yankee stress.

I think he's a man, and it's his decision to make.

People are weighing the elements of money versus glory, etc., etc., but look, the man's not poor. He can do whatever the freak he wants.

Respect his decision or not, but it was only his to make.
