You should have read the fine print. Many leases will require at least 30-60 days notice to vacate and after a year many lease go month to moth. If you do not renew the lease, then they can raise the rent, but they will only likely do that that depending on what other prices in the area are going for.

It's common.
If you are on good terms with the landlord (or agent) you may be able to negotiate a compromise. You may want to create the impression that you cannot meet the new, higher lease rate. No landlord in his right mind wants to renew a lease if the lessee cannot make payments.
As mentioned by other answerers --- in the future, be careful of what you are signing. And if you have questions or doubts about certain language, ask about them, or ask to have them changed. If you are unsatisfied with a contract and cannot get it changed, then DON'T SIGN IT!

I guess it has changed since I rented. Used to be 30 days. The increase and automatic renewal should have been explained at the original signing. Since you signed it though, it is probably a done deal.

Yes, 60 is fairly standard in most apartment complexes. I've also heard 90 and 30 before, too.

Did you type a letter to notify that you are moving out? If so, do you have a copy of it or save it in your computer file? How did you notify the landlord? By talking through telephone? Handing the notice letter to the landlord? Mailing the notice letter? If you did mail it, then you may need to check the post office out and find that letter. Handing the notice letter to the landlord, then s/he is a truly dirty business. Talking through telephone is a WORST idea way to notify. Hope this helps.

The usual requirement is 30 days. But if you signed on the dotted line, and they had it in print, you are screwed.

Depends on the state you live in. In my state 30 days is customary, but any time can be negotiated in the rental contract.
Remember to read before you sign. If you don't like something, ask for it to be changed.
