I've been trying to call a sodding office for the past 45 minutes now and for all that time I've had to suffer through the unbearable crappiness that is the 80's pop-funk jingle.

Grrrr!!

Where do these so called 'musicians' live and how can I get my vengance?

I've been on hold for other offices that play some freaking sweet tunes. So far, my favourite songs have been some track by the Gorillaz and Gnarles Barkley. At that point I'd rather sit there and just hum happily to myself instead of speaking to some CIO somewhere. :P

It all started with a little factory in the US in the mid 1900s. I think it was an upholstery factory. one day a customer told the owner that he heard music when he was on hold. It turns out that the wiring for the phone lines somehow intercepted a radio signal or the signal from the factory's radio. (yes this is possible, after all you can make a radio with a nail a piece of wood, a speaker and some copper wire). Needless to say the owner investigated it and ended up creating (with help) a system that would always play the radio while somebody was on hold...
Since then the technology has immensely increased, with radio, CDs, mp3, and even Internet broadcasting of music while on hold. unfortunately business have capitalized on it, so now you are likely to hear advertisements.
With the type of music playing... You have to realize some....dumb people... are offended by certain music, so usually if is neutral bland and boring, but occasionally some company has some "popular" music....

I hope that helps... as far as the getting your vengeance part, well most of them are dead, or so old that the rights for the songs are easily accessible (the companies who sell the equipment/CDs etc to the company you are on hold with need to buy the rights in order to sell the music)

Unfortunately, I know for a fact that the music used for most customer service lines is horrible elevator music from the eighties or even worse, classical. Don't get me wrong. Classical can be quite beautiful, but not when it's being piped into your eardrum at three million decibles!
What makes it worse? I remember twenty years back, calling in to customer service and having to hear fifties and sixties music turned into slow elevator music. It was terrible! No matter how much I claim to be a pacifist, that music would make me want to kill somebody, anybody once I got off the line. I really feel sorry for the person that eventually answers the line cause I let them have it.
Crickette.

It's not so much the music, dear one. What you are truly upset by is having to spend 45 minutes on the phone waiting for someone in a call center to put you on hold for another 45 minutes.

That can only be resolved by addressing your concerns to the company itself.

Wish I could help more.

Hold music is choosen by the individual company. So what ever company you are on hold with you should ask to speak to the manager or someone in charge to get that changed.
