Yes you can take paracetamol because it has been around for ages. The only reason that they say not to take medicine when pregnant is that they no longer allow testing of drugs to be done on pregnant women (which they did allow back in the days of paracetamol). This means that they can't prove one way or another how it will affect you. It doesn't mean that it will harm you, just that they are not allowed to test them.

I'm 35 weeks pregnant and a few weeks ago had really bad headaches, after speaking to my doctor she said that paracetamol is perfectly safe to take throughout pregnancy.
You should always ask your doctor first before taking anything.

If you have pain during pregnancy, you may take Tylenol or acetaminophen up to 2 tablets or 650 mg every 4 hours. Do not take aspirin during your pregnancy unless instructed to do so by your physician. Aspirin may cause problems with blood clotting and cause other problems during labor and delivery. Do not take ibuprofen (Advil) unless instructed by your physician, especially in the last 3 months of your pregnancy. If a headache persists for more than 24 hours, you should call your physician.

You should try and avoid taking all medication while you are pregnant but in practise this is quite hard to do. I would always check with your doctor before taking any medication. If you read the instructions that come with the packet it will tell you if it safe to take while you are pregnant but it is really better to try and see if you manage without taking anything. Good luck.

Paracetamol is safe during pregnancy, but should be taken only when ABSOLUTELY necessary and in moderation. Make sure, however, you stay away from aspirin and ibuprofen.

Go to a libary or book store and get a drug reference book for nurses (sorry can't find mine) It will give you a pregnancy category on the drugs and an explaination of what they mean near the front of the book. Or find a web site. Catagory A is safest. Other categories mean they have been tested but test are inconclusive. Category D or higher is definitive for birth defects.
