Why the hell not. The best teachers are the people that have lived and had many experiences. The willingness to mold young minds. Passionate about teaching and learning. And know how to fit in with any group or situation. If this is not a gay quality then I don't know what is.

I don't know of any specific instances of school systems or states forbidding gay people from teaching, but I'm sure there are some. Hell, there are school districts that have banned all books that talk about queer people, include queer characters, or even are written by people known to be/have been queer. That includes classic literature - schools literally banning Oscar Wilde from their libraries
And a lot of places don't have any laws protecting queer people from job discrimination, and a lot of areas would not knowingly hire a gay person as a teacher (and will fire them if they find out after hiringt hem).

Of course you can teach if you are gay. I'm gay, have been out since my teens, and am tenured professional faculty in a major university. Don't believe everything you hear -- and yes you can teach at the primary and secondary school levels too.
Kind thoughts,
Reyn

Depends on the grade level and the climate of the school district. No problem in college or university, probably a definite no-no at a Christian pre-school.
An episode of "Stone Soup" captured my sentiments: A woman commented that the town was in an uproar over an 8th grade teacher whose lifestyle was "too alternative" for their liking. Just then the other woman's 13 year old daughter came storming into the house, slammed the door, slammed her books on the table and stormed into her bedroom, slamming that door, too. Her mother's comment: "Frankly, I would think they'd kiss the feet of anyone who was willing!"

That was my question. The answer is yes, in most public schools. However, the point I made in response to your answer was that openly gay teachers are sometimes targeted for termination under one pretext or another after it is learned they are gay. This has been an issue in my state.
The answer from "For all the good..." is right on the money.

That's the most absurd thing I've ever heard! I've had plenty of gay teachers when I was in elementary and in high school. I also have gay friends that are teachers.

I don't have a problem with a gays teaching my children. I do have a problem, on the other hand, with pedophiles teaching my children. Good luck. 2D

What country is the question in? In the USA you are allowed to teach no matter your race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, or creed as long as you have the correct credentials.
