WARNING - SPOILERS - although there is a spoiler in the question too I guess, oh well. I tried.

Your guess was that there were only 100 zombies behind them, you don't really know. How do they get to the island? How did they get on the mainland? Neither of those questions were answered we just join the mayhem already in progress.

In the original, Night of the Living Dead they mentioned that it was radiation that affected the atmosphere from a wayward satellite that feel to earth that may have caused the mutations and making the dead come back to life. In Dawn of the Dead (new or old, doesn't matter), they really didn't give an explanation, they just mentioned that people were infected and once they were infected they could spread it simply by biting them. They really didn't say where the whole thing evolved from, but since Dawn of the Dead was a follow-up to Night of the Living Dead the assumption is that the radiation is still at fault and once radiation is in the atmosphere it could spread everywhere, hence the reason that the "island" was also infected.

It could be that the "island" was also attached to a mainland or that an infected person came across on a ferry to the island or by boat and then bit the first person, thereby setting off a chain reaction.

In the film though it was more of a shock value and they really didn't explain it away.

Night of the Living Dead really was based on some "factual" information. Apparently in the 60's the army was testing some nerve gas and they were testing this in a morgue. The bodies didn't get up and walk around but apparently they "moved" or twitched. This is the story that George Romero heard about to start the zombie movie as we know it today.

The cause of Zombies in Lucio Fulci's version Zombie was from voodoo. Most other movies from the past that mentioned zombies, including the first film that really had a zombie in it, "White Zombie" all dealt with voodoo rights until George Romero came along and changed the origin of the zombie.

Oh yeah, at the end of the movie it was obvious that they were all killed. The thing I question is how did this tape just suddenly start running? Now that's one to ponder for a while.

Someone infeccted travelled to the Island and spread the disease. If you see the blurry camera work it drops in the end so you can only assume that they all died!

It's the best zombie fim I've ever seen along with 28 days later for sure!

I just assumed that the island was already populated. Zombies are suppose retain basic motor skills so I would also assume that they can swim or atleast float. lol. I don't think they can drown so they can't die that way. Then again with enough water in their blood system I guess that water could make it's way to the brain and thus causing enough brain damage to kill one. lol. Since brain damage seems to be the deciding factor. Next time you visit your Dr. it's probably best that you confirm my water to the brain theory with him. The one thing that I do know thowe, is that nothing would make me happier than a sequel to that movie.

It's a movie, so not everything has to make sense. They made it seem pretty clear that the zombies were going to kill the people.

maybe some bugs took some of the infected blood and went to the island and infected the people there

Shooting one person in the head is hard. How do you shoot 25/1? They did not pick that island it picked them. remember they were drifting for a long time.
