They are placed there by a group called a non-profit Christian organization called the Gideons. The Gideons are not preachers, but businessmen who feel called to help with this ministry. They raise money from churches and individuals and use this money to print and distribute Bibles to many places--wherever they are allowed to put them--such as hospitals, prisons, and motel rooms. Through feedback and letters they receive, they have learned of many people who picked up one of their Bibles in a desperate moment and found the faith to turn their lives around.
All Marriott hotels have Book of Mormon, too, because Mr. Marriott is/was (don't know if he is still living or not) a Mormon.

Gideons is a religious organization that distributes Bibles for free. Well... They started to place them in hotels and specially in Motels because, that was the favorite housing of "shady people", and that was this organization's idea on how to reach them "to repent"... But, also, they made the effort because later on, Motels and some inexpensive Hotels, were also the housing of the Homeless. Gideons wanted to help them out by leaving a good message of hope with The Bible.

There is an Christian Organization called the Gideons that place Bibles in Hotels and Hospitals and Prisons and some Schools even so. They are named after a Great man of God from the Old Testament, You can read about Gideon in the book of Judges chapter 6, God used him to win a great battle for the Children of Isreal. A lot of people have had their lives changed by those Bibles being in those places at the right times. Of course today the ACLU is trying to stop them but at the Present time they are continueing to carry out this awesome ministry for the Lord. Great Question.

I thought it was because guys in hotels tend to call prostitutes. Business men, traveling men etc. I know a church that used to set up operations in naval yards along american coasts to discourage foreign sailors from promiscuous behavior.

The Gideon society places them there as part of their mission to spread the word of God. Hotels let them place them there.

Why not?
There's a phone book, a book for services of the hotel, and other stuff. A lot of people read it every day. Not every hotel does that.

well i see several people have already told you that the Gideons place them there, which is true, but the reason why they chose the hotel is because that is the epitome of where you would find the most sin!! ;)

I think it's traditional. This Country was founded on Biblical principles and the Bible was always around and people would read it on a regular basis, so it was placed in public and private places.
