I'm just wondering why my breaks are squeaking?? I got new break pads back in 2003, would this mean I'm going to need a whole new set of breaks? It's a 2000, so it's going on 8 yrs old. Do you know what that would cost?

When brakes squeak, it's usually a sign that the pads are worn down to the point where you need to replace them. In some cases, however, your brakes will squeak when you need to have the calipers rebuilt or replaced (which may be the case in a 2000 model-year car). Best bet is to take your car to a brake shop and have them give you an estimate. If it's just the pads, most brake shops have a special where they start at $89.99 per axle, so you'd be looking at about $200.00. If they need to replace rotors and/or drums it'll be more like $400.00, depending on the make and model of your car. Calipers are expensive -- be prepared to pay at least $600.00 if your calipers need work.

Sometimes mechanics use cheap brake pads that can cause squeaking (even if new). If the squeak is a high pitch squeak then you might need new ones. Also, you might want to think about how hard you use your brakes, in other words, your driving habits.

You should go get them checked out. My mother just had her brakes changed, actually. Hers were squeaky as well and they cost her about $250 dollars for both front and back brakes. But I guess it depends on the make of your car and where you go. Don't put it off too long, you don't want your brakes to fail on you.

It's possible that you just need brake pads again. They DO wear down...and it has been 4 years or so since you've had new ones...and they tend to squeak when they wear down.

It depends more on how many miles you have driven since the last brake job.

More than 60,000 miles? They're probably due.
Less than 20,000 they may just be dirty.
