Grew up in Pomona and Helms showed up every day. I didn't find out that they were based in Azusa on Foothill Blvd. until I was about 13 or 14.

Those old Helms trucks make great transportation for surfboards.

I remember going out with my mommy to see what kind of cookies and bread that they had. The man would stop and open the back of the truck and pull out one of a dozen wooden drawers filled with goodies. They had the best baked goods ever!!!

We also had a milkman. Milk went well with the cookies.

I lived in L.A. County for 13 years, and Helms stood for Heaven on Earth to me. I'd actually forgotten them. Now that I've been back in Virginia for almost 40 years, the best bakery on Earth used to be Dot's and is now owned by Ukrop's, a Richmond-based grocer that (to me) has the best of everything.

That's where I shop when it isn't Tuesday. (Tuesday is Kroger day -- 5% off for geezers.)
