If you're going by the books, which are more important in my opinion, it really depends which events you consider the beginning and end of the journey. Frodo leaves Bag End on September 23 of the year 1418 (Shire Reckoning). However, he actually leaves the Shire on September 26. On their return, the hobbits reach the Brandywine Bridge on October 30, 1419 (Shire Reckoning). Saruman isn't defeated and Bag End returned to Frodo, however, until November 3.

I think near the end of the movie Return of the King, Frodo mentions it took them 13 months.
