Yes I have received fraudulent checks in the mail, upon further investigation I found that everything was supposedly real. But, once deposited it turned out not to be a good check.
The check itself had the right information as far as Company, Account #, and even the Signature....but there was a number at the top right corner and it turns out that that company doesn't have numbers on their checks, so it was a fake and I incurred charges for it not being honored.
I called the bank that it was drawn from and confirmed the account #, and that there was money enough in that account to honor the check, the company was a real company, and the gentleman's name on the authorization was real as well.
Don't be foolish, report it to the authorities, or even the bank that it's drawn from............

I once got a real check drawn on a real bank here in MI, the check came from another state. I took it to the branch here and found out it was a scam. Dont cash it at your bank. Take it to a pnc branch or call the bank and verify funds.
Did it say why you were being sent the check? Did you have plumbing done with this company? If not, its a big scam.

Goto PNC.com and call the bank to confirm if it is in fact a good check. A lot of good backs have been conterfited. Yes PNC is real and so is Middlesex. Did the pumping company do any work for you. Call the number on the check and ask then what its for. Usually a con is where they give you a "small amount" and ask you to send a processing fee to get the rest. Just call the bank and the company and see what its about

Could be a scam. One scam is to send a phony check that somehow is not immediately detected as phony (I believe it's typically a certified check). You cash it and actually get funds deposited into your account. Then they ask for the money back, or part of it, you send it to them. Sometime later your bank discovers that the first check was fake and takes the money out of your account.

Have you ever done business with this company? Is there any reason why they would send you a check? If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. I'd be cautious.

I would advise phoning the bank, providing the account number of the checking account, and asking if your check is valid. Any unexpected check for such an amount is subject to doubt. You may discover this to be some sort of scam. Good luck !

Why would someone send you a $4,000 check for nothing? It is almost certainly a scam. Verify with the bank on the check. If its bogus, turn it in to the postal inspectors.

Tear it up, and throw it away. It is not even worth the paper printed on. Remember, anything that seems too good to be true, is. The check is phony, and when you pay the $2970, you will be out that sum.
