I mean William Shatner is certainly one of a kind. It is going to be so darn hard to get his speech patterns sounding like if it really is him. Think of all the comedians who mocked Shatner through the years for his speech patterns, they were mostly funny, but did any of them actually sound just like him?

I submit that no one can sound exactly like William Shatner, he is one of a kind.

Of course I meant to be a little funny about this topic, but also I am sincere. I think anyone who tries to fill the shoes of James T. Kirk (William Shatner) will leave us disappointed, to say the least.

Madpol, "overacting"? LOL Too funny, yeah I remember a Roast on Cabel TV for William Shatner. They blasted him for that several times, very funny.

Consider how your own speech patterns have changed in the past 15-20 years.. The timbre of your voice, the phrases you use, hormonal changes... It would be unrealistic to expect a younger incarnation of James T to sound "just" like the Captain we love... Just as each of the novels show some novel aspect of the characters we enjoy, I would hope that the new actor will be able to do so also... Those are big shoes he's filling! Kudos to his bravery...

At the minute Shanter is easily the better of the two but considering Pine has only been in one movie while Shatner has been in 7 and a tv series, I wouldn't think it is fair to make the comparison. Give Pine a few more movies and then maybe we will be able to judge properly, at the moment the new Star Trek is in it's infancy.

I think that the only thing that Chris Pine (slated to play Kirk) can do is NOT to perfectly imitate Shatner. Granted, Chris will have to keep Kirk as Kirky as possible, but there's really no substitute for Shatner. He'll probably give Kirk his own spin.

Good question. They will need a nobody from outta' nowhere.

Captain Kirk is replaceable. Gene Roddenberry is the hard act to follow here.

Even though his age wouldnt be right for this movie, I think Ben Affleck could do a great shatner impression, he has that same pausing thing he doesnt when he speaks sometimes.

Anthony Hopkins, my choice...
EDIT: Dennis Hopper would be my second choice.
However, only M. Jackson can do the part any justice. I am with Madpol, Shattner CAN NOT be called an actor, but rather overactor.
Just foolin' with you...
