The holly shrub in my backyard has been growing outward. it has dark green leaves with sharp spines. What kind of holly is it? And how can I trim it so it will look neat?

Truthfully I have never trimmed mine. I prefer to let them grow naturally.
As far as I know they all have leaves with pointed ends that stick you.

In general, Hollies tolerant pruning very well. I have cut hollies so they look like bare trunks and they have grown back (this worked on Ilex cornuta). However unless you want to look at a harshly pruned holly all winter, it is better to do it in spring, just before the new growth starts.
This might help you
What kind ?
There are so many different ones it would be hard to guess what kind.

I have holly shrubs and I keep them trimmed with a hedge trimmer. Also for the hollies to have berries you must have a male shrub within one hundred feet of the female shrubs.
This is one of my favorite shrubs, as it is always green and with the red berries it is so attractive.

Sounds like Ilex aquifolium, trim with a hedgecutter or shears(use a saw for thick stems) it any time over winter from now really, but I always wait until Christmas then use some of the timmings as decorations in the house or to make a wreath.

I bought an inexpensive electric hedge trimmer at Lowes to trim mine. Works very well. Mine are planted next to my foundation, under the bathroom window, so I keep them trimmed flat on top and let the outer edges grow as natural as possible, just shaping them to keep them neat looking.

Light pruning can be done pretty much any time a shrub needs it and you have the time to do it. Heavy pruning however, should only be done while a plant is dormant, in the winter.

Now is a good time of year to do a heavy pruning with shears or hedge trimmers.
