The war of 1812. It was right after the English subdued Napoleon, and it was triggered because English sailors would abduct Americans at sea and force them to fight for England. it was a particularly disastrous and pointless war: the English burned the White House, the English faced major casualties in an ill-planned attempt to invade New Orleans (sold to the Americans after 1803 or 04), and America failed to invade Canada. a treaty was signed, restoring all territories to former status before the war.

I would gather that you are referring the the American war of 1812.
In June 1812 the US declared war upon Great Britain. Tensions had been rising between the two nations since the successful separation of the American colonies, many English still viewed the US as a delinquent colony, waiting for a time to retake the colonies. But Great Britain was at war with France/Napoleon and most of French controlled Europe and Great Britain was in a desperate situation. The US sought to remain neutral in this struggle but traded with all parties involved. The US shipping fleet became the largest in the world and immigrating to the US was easy, many Europeans and English sailors immigrated to the US and were serving in the merchant marine. England desperately needed sailors and English ships short on crew would often prey the US coastline stopping US flagged ship and impressing the crews. The incident that sparked the outcry for war was when a British warship stopped and impressed the crew of a newly launched American war ship that had not yet seated it cannons. This occurred in plain view of the shore and the news papers raged about the incident enough that President Madison asked for a declaration of War and Congress granted it.

What is interesting is that the US at the time did not have a standing Army outside of the military academy at West Point and a number of forts on the frontier and a small Navy, and the US declares war on the most powerful nation on the planet. But Fortunately the American Navy proved to be small but powerful and the newly form army strong enough to retain independence for the US. After the Battle of New Orleans Britian decided it had had enough of war and sought a settlement with the US.
The US learned the value of retaining a strong Navy and Army. Not to mention staying out of European affairs.

You speak of "we" and "us" as if everyone in the world is an American.

The 1812 war was fought by the Americans against us British; but also against the Canadians and certain Native Americans such as the Dakotah Sioux.
