They also don't seem to have anumber of other punctuation devices could any one shed any light on this for me please. Even the oldest ones pose this problem.

back then the capital letter i was used for the number one. most other punctuation wasn't used back then. Today's keyboards have a ton of extras not needed by most people today...Keyboards on typewriters are the very basic you can get.

On a typewriter, you used the lower case L " l " for the numeral one (1).

Other puntuaction and symbols were done with "inserts" on the old IMB Electric... they slipped into a holder, and were struck with any other key (usually the Z)... These were expensive, and used for layout work on publications and technical sheets.
