This is one of several annoying expressions that are popular today. Again, it goes back to the fact that there clearly never was any emotion in music until emo was created. So, how did the term “scene” come into being? It sounds like lame 50’s style lingo, “Hey Daddy-O, that scene is so square, man. Oh, how’s the fish, Al?” Or does the term refer to the fact that emos are given to drama and crying at the drop of a hat? In other words, they enjoy “making a scene.”

Sookie - I'm not so sure "Daddy-O" needs to make a comeback. But I must say, cutting yourself is a helluva way to make a scene. :)

Master C - I think you are on to something. Great explanation.

MachPen - Whoa, does your boss know you are in the R&P?? It did seem a lot cooler when the Beatnik Generation used the term. What would Jack think about it today?

Maybe I was wrong, Daddy-O is getting Mike Patton style love.

Spooky - A very loud "rimshot" goes out to you, but it made me laugh, so good work.

They are called scene kids, because you wish you'd never "scene" them... Maybe? Eh, everybody else gave you great answers so I thought I would take it in a different direction.

Yes Sookie! - the phrase "Daddy-O" needs to make a comeback. But that's just the JAck Kerouac fan in me talking :)

but yeah "scenesters" was indeed originally a beat term. Scene kids of (edit: today's) emo variety-- I guess they're an "exclusive" lot. You must also either be on Ritalin or Xanax to be in. These kids have hijacked a term that was once used to describe a cool literary movement -- not a music "scene"

Making a scene, LOL, that's good! I just figured it came from the idea that emo is the latest trend, or what's on the scene. Hence, scene kids. I've noticed a lot of stupid new terms lately that kids use. I guess I'm getting old because I used to always be up to date on the latest slang, and much of it I would use. But now when I hear a slang term I think, "That's retarded. Who thought that up?" Who thinks of slang terms anyway? Does somebody just make it up one day and pass it off as though it's the latest thing?

I think it's just a term someone slapped and it caught on. I know of 2 types of "scene kids" that get blasted today...nu metal kids, and emos. Both seem to bring in immature fans with a lack of knowledge. Nu metal kids seem to think when they begin listening to some band, they're cool and can brag about them. Metalheads seem to have issues with them, especially when they become fans of some metal band that the metalers believe "SOLD OUT" (best examples are In Flames, Nightwish, and Lacuna Coil).

But probably the most worse of the scene kids are the emos, especially the preteen girls...they've ruined the image of many bands that never had a immature fanbase...it's tough to even admit liking Green Day these days due to these fans.

Hmm, good question. I am so out of it nowadays, I don't even know what half of this crap means. However if you feel like puking, you should go to photobucket and type "scene hair" into the search. The results are both frightening and sad.

p.s. I know that because I stumbled upon a question on here that someone asked, which was essentially "how do I get emo hair". I was interested in what the responses would be, and someone gave that little word of advice. **shudders**

Because they are Scenesters. They don't even know it's a derogatory statement.
It's a term usually used to refer to someone who just looks the part and engages in mannerisms that the community expects of them (or how they perceive it). They will only dress the part, and go to the places that they are told, and not do what they want to do. They conform to non-conformity.
Scene kids is just a way of sugar coating the term, which goes beyond Emo. Punk has a big problem with them too (example "Anything after the 80s isn't real punk").

I would go along with both reasons. Every generation has a term or slang that defines them, whether it is cool, groovy, hip, key, off the hook, etc. Emo's though do play to their teenage drama queen fans though hence they intend on making a scene. Nice first offering today!

Vote #4 for the return of "Daddy-O." I'm a big fan of square too.

I remember about 7 years ago I lived near Silver Lake which is kind of the artsy section of L.A. and there were all sorts of "scenesters" that would hang out at clubs like Space Land(as I'm sure it was in the artsy center of all the "hip" major cities). The music scene they supported was actually pretty ok, stuff like pretty interesting indie rock (hard and soft) and I don't know, rock bands that had vintage keyboards (you know the kind). The problem was that it felt so contrived and elitist. It appears that the emo kids have co-opted that look and attitude (which is funny silly kids stealing from silly, elitist young adults, I bet they whine about it a lot) and made it feel even more contrived. And as this is playing out in my head it started with scenesters and now has devolved into scene kids. So, really it comes down to the emo culture co-opting something and making it almost a parody of itself which seems to be what that culture does.

(insert Bostonian accent) "Ahem..(tap, tap) We stand here as Americans with a host of problems. Our fathers stood, arms in their arms, pressing forward against an enemy. Faceless, nameless in the shadows of our hearts. They fought a plague of indecency so they could return to a home of freedom, liberty and values. They fought for an America free of inanities. Free of words like "emo" and "post post hard rock indie art faux tainment." This country is degrading and I feel the shame of those who fought and died in the trenches. All I ask of you is to rise up and call alternative pop alternative pop. Stand next to your brother and chastise the guy who has the lip ring that just makes it look like he has herpes. Dig it Daddy-O these great men made the beds you sleep in with their blood, sweat and tears. MAKE THEM PROUD! and buy don't download for free"

Thanks Dani.

They follow the scene...meaning they follow what's in! Haha.

I know my answer isn't right, but that's kinda how I view it now. They all claim to be original, but look at them with their big ol' mullets and their sidekicks! Lol. They all have their names on myspace that are like Mindy Massacre or Ashley Asthetic. It's way stupid. And most of them have to have certain standards and try to make other people feel like crap. So basically, they aren't different because they all pretty much act the same.

Haha. Anyway..well people call me a scene kid. As I understand they listen to a variety of music, as long as its underground or obscure music. Often times Post-hardcore or Hardcore music is the favorite. And the fashion is somewhat like 80's hair metal with a modern twist. They are not "emo" and in fact they are very happy.

Edit: And to actually answer why they are called "scene kids", its because they go to a lot of shows(concerts) in their area.
