Monica has to lay off the kool-aid. Shakespeare wrote the plays attributed to him.

I have never before today known the author's name of the romance which is the source of R & J. But Lope de Vega in Spain at the same time and a little later than Shakespeare also wrote a play of the same plot, Montreses y Castlevines (Montegues and Capulets), obviously copying the well-known story. The original was an Italian romance by Mateo Bandello, copied by the Engish author of Romeus and Juliet which may be the source of Shakespeare's play but Bandello's may be as well, and is, no doubt, the source of Lope's play also. So I'd go with Bandello.

Romeo's age is unknown, but 14 or 15 probably would be right. In Shakespeare's time they paid no attention to the age of the actor vs. the age of the character and quite ofter middle aged actors would play a role like Romeo or Hamlet.

Shakespeare's primary source for Romeo and Juliet was Arthur Brooke's Romeus and Juliet, first published in 1562, two years before Shakespeare's birth, and reprinted in 1587, about eight years before the first performance of Romeo and Juliet.

There is not much records of Shakespeare´s personal life. Rumors arise from time to time that he did not write his plays, but the real author was Christopher Marlowe, Queen Elizabeth or Edward De Vere (1550-1604), whom T.J. Looney identified in 1920 as the author of Shakespeare's plays.
