Horses have been stumbling into orchards and fruit groves since time immemorial. The results are rarely detrimental to the horse. If you and your horse both like it, and you can afford the fruit, why not?
Giving a horse an apple as a treat is a time-honored tradition.

No you don't pamper him too much, he loves you for what you do!! But just make sure it's not all the time. And make sure the fruit isn't too small or too big!!

We had this one old guy who'd escape now and then and invariably wind up shopping for his snax in the garden, so we started sharing the bounty with all of the horses. One loves zucchini with a passion, they all like melons of any stripe and of course, apples are a hit. My old gramma mare has a genuine thing for watermelon rinds, so we keep a supply in the fridge just for her. So, no, I think you are just being kind to your critter and sharing good things.

One of the favorite treats at our barn is cold watermelon and the rinds. It cools them off, and it's sweet but mostly water anyway. And it's fun to watch them get all slobbery ;)
