Well Johnny, are you going to take kym's, I mean Wikipedia's, answer as a valid opinion? 'Tis a shame when people who don't even know the topic they are answering cannot even give us their own opinion.

General George Meade felt everything/everyone was in the right position on the second day to defend itself against whatever the Rebels could throw at them. When General Dan Sickles repositioned the Third Corps somewhat after 1:00 p.m. on the 2nd day of the Battle of Gettysburg, he gave the Rebels the false impression of an easy victory - a reason to attack. I agree with Col. Frank A. Haskell, who was there:

"I suppose the truth probably is that General Sickles supposed he was doing for the best; but he was neither born nor bred a soldier. But this move of the Third Corps was an important one -- it developed the battle -- the results of the move to the Corps itself we shall see."

Colonel Frank A. Haskell

Thanks for the thumbs down, Perz.

Sickles blundered by sending his Corps forward...against orders. He exposed the Union left flank which Longstreet quickly took advantage. The rebs nearly took Cemetery Ridge, if they could've followed-up the opportunity. Instead, a great many men fell in the Peach Orchard and Wheatfield for nothing.

Sickles violated orders and murdered thousands of his men. he was an asshole. He was a congessman turned general because they could make themselves that back then. He even gave himself the Congressional Medal of Honor for his f up. My chem teacher was his great great grandson and he was just as big of an asshole.

meade was right, prudent but right, Lee finally had a man patient enough to deal with him.
