That is one of the most spectacularly intelligent questions, considering that so many of unnecessary conflicts are caused by the lack of emotional intelligence. For example thinking "what is the worst that can happen if I get there slightly later than I planned?" , and then " what is the worst that can happen if I drive too fast/recklessly?" and just imagine the horror stories. Or you can think of someone you know as having loads of emotional intelligence, and imagine how they would react. I have also heard of counting to ten before reacting. Basically not having emotional intelligence causes people not to trust you. Having people's trust is a biggie most people. I hope this helps.

First you realize you need to become emotionally mature.

Then you set out educating yourself by....

reading books on the subject
talking to people who you think are emotionally mature
watching people do the emotionally right and wrong things
being aware of your own behavior and be willing to make positive changes.

I don't think you're ever "there"....it's a work in progress.

You must not be afraid of your emotions. Do these emotions cause you discomfort, awkwardness, or depression? You need to embrace them and understand why they occur. In order to do this, you must experience them, not suppress them. Only at that point will you be able to control them, or control the situation which puts you into a certain emotional state.
