he's already made a lot of money - and can get a longer contract elsewhere.

As a Mets fan you embarrass me. You really do. What kind of silly question is this? Any baseball fan worth his salt knows the Torre is the man and would never call him an idiot. Even Boston fans have respect for Torre. And you have the audacity to call him an idiot. If you’re going to be a fan of the game, learn something about its dynamics and what drives it. Learn something about baseball, watch more baseball, and don’t insult one of the greatest managers in the game.

i agree with the others who say that it's not about the money. it's exactly the same as if a "regular" person worked a "regular" job and was offered a pay cut from $75k to $50k.
Torre's pay in 2007 was $7.5M, whether he won the world series or finished in last place. Boss George made Torre a $5M base offer he knew Torre could and would refuse.
Stein didn't want to look like the bad guy and fire him outright, so he lowballed Torre to get him to leave.

apparently you have issues using your head. Everyone knows that Torre made the right choice and he should never accept the contract those idiots in the front office offered him. I would love to see one of them try to get that team in the playoffs every year and win 4 WS.

He's the first manager to leave Steinbrenner under his own terms, rather than being kicked out the door. Maybe he doesn't need the money any more. maybe he wants to relax and enjoy the rest of his life without stress. maybe he realizes that it is unfair and ridiculous to assume that any team is a failure if it doesn't make it to the World Series. In any case, I respected him a lot before (And I'm a Mets fan), now my respect for him is immeasurable.

When are fans like u who probably is either a bandwagon fan or hasn't been a fan long enough to know what he's talking about anyway is going to realize that it's not always about the money? It's about respect & Torre wasn't given respect. While i will miss him he did that right thing.

He's not an idiot. The Yankees disrespected him and he stood up for himself and told Steinbrenner to shove it. Joe Torre is anything but an idiot. Good for him.

The Yankees really didn't want him back. A one year contract is a slap in the face. Besides, he 70 years old and should retire and enjoy life.

It was a slap in the face. They obviously didn't want him back because they would have counter-offered and came to a middle ground but after Torre refused the Yanks just said "Ok, bye". I don't blame him.
