I dry pail, and wash every two days at the latest, and they come out lovely and clean, and still super white, but just a bit niffy (of the wee I imagine, not the ahem, other stuff). Is there anythign I can add to the soap powder in the machine to fragrance them a little, without causing irritation or shortening the life of the nappies? Any and all suggestions gratefully received!

Add a bit of baking soda with the detergent, that's guaranteed to work, and not cause any problems

Cloth diapers should be washed with a detergent just like your other laundry, don't use the kind that says "chemical free" because they leave a residue in the diapers. Make sure you use a 2nd rinse cycle. During the first rinse cycle put in a cup of white vinegar and let the 2nd cycle rinse it out.
I'm incontinent and I wear diapers 24 / 7 and this is what I have found best for helping keep diapers fresh smelling. Also, if you have the opportunity, hang them out in the sun to dry every other time or so and this too will help because of the sun's natural whitening and anti-bacterial properties.
Good luck.

Hiiii there...he he u can alwyas use COMFORT liquid softner...u must have heard that i guess so. Daz god..it duzn cause any rashes. At the last rinse...u add a little and rinse the nappies in it nicely and then squeeze and put them to dry.
remember...as soon as the babyes nappy gets wet with wee....u have to put it to wash..firt wash it a bit..send off the wee and put it to soak. dont keep for hrs and then out in the machine..then the smell comes.
and make sure u pour boiling water ont he nappies which u put to soak in the washing poweder...it kills germs.
once dry IRON the nappies and fold for next use.
Al the best.

I don't use cloth diapers but my almost 4 year old can manage to wet his bed at night even with a pullup on....... and sometimes it dries before I know it's there and then there's that smell.... I use 1 TBSP (15ml.) of white vinegar added to my regular laundry soap and wash on a warm cycle. It gets any stains out and the sheets NEVER smell after I've used the vinegar in the wash.

Nappisan is definately the answer. You soak the nappies in it in a bucket of water and nappisan whilst waiting to wash them.
I guess you could just try adding that to the wash as you can just put it in the drawer of the washing machine and that might shift the smell.

We used to use 'nappysan' A liquid cleaner that you soak nappies in for a few hours before the machine wash. They always came out fresh. We also used a(kitchen) liner to catch the poo and that went straight into the toilet.
Cheers!

Put 1/2 to 1/3 cup of vinegar in the rinse (use the fabric softener dispenser).
Also dry them in the sun when possible.

Try putting them through a rinse cycle before you wash. I do this and find it really helps get rid of the wee smell.
