Metals have 1-3 electrons in the outer shell of each atom. Non metals usually have 4-8 electrons in their outer shell.

metals are located on the left hand side of the periodic table, they have a low electronegative meaning they "give" electrons away easily, for this reason they form positive ions by loosing elections.

non metals are located on the right side of the periodic table, they have high electronegative, meaning they held electrons tightly, this is the reason they form negative ions by gaining electrons.
