My boyfriends house was just foreclosed on, and was put up for auction. He also has credit card debt, in the 10,000+ area. He is starting a business that has the potential to be amazing, but is not there yet. He really wants to get married, we have been togther for three years. However, I am terrified about my credit and our financial future. Any advice is greatly appreciated, thank you!

Be honest with him and tell him he needs to demonstrate more responsibility before you marry him. Tell him you are worried about damaging your credit. If he gets angry and excessively defensive, he's the wrong guy.

You ought to watch Suze Ormond on CNBC on weekends or look her up on the web. She gives excellent financial advice for everyone, but her target audience is women more than men.

I would go to your boyfriend and just be honest with him. Tell him straight up that if you marry him, your credit will be destroyed, which it will be. Tell him that although you love him, if you two are going to be married you need to think of what is best for both of you and your upcoming family. Tell him the wedding needs to be delayed until he is financially in order. If he doesn't understand, then he doesn't care about your needs, only his, and you shouldn't marry him anyway.

Stay with your first thought. How can he provide for a wife if he is having trouble taking care of himself? Be very cautious of even why he wants to get married now? Is it for you or your credit score? You have been dating for 3 years. What lit the torch under him now? Think about it.

You are right to be concerned. From a strictly financial standpoint, you can better protect yourself by not marrying until he has straightened out his finances and demonstrates better responsibility.

Since you have been with him for three years, you can marry him and help him with his business.

When you marry him, you will take on any and ALL debt that he already has. Think very carefully about your decision.
