I would say this : balls
People used to have them. We used to take risks. We used to fight for what we wanted. Einstein was told he was one of the dumbest student's the teacher had. When he came up with his theories, all the leading scientist laughed at him. Who is this guy? No education. Works at a patent office. Guess who got the last laugh.
The Wright bros. wrote the Smithsonian asking for all the information available on the mechanics of flight. Then they decided it was all wrong and threw it out, started from scratch.
FDR nearly emptied America's bank accounts trying to develop the atomic bomb.
Alexander the Great couldn't get to the city of Tyre, which the Babylonians attacked for 13 years with a much powerful navy and army unsuccessfully. Alexander just build a long bridge, twice, and took it in a few days.
Christopher Columbus sailed to the "edge of the world" because he knew it wasn't.
Bill Lear sold his entire company and put his life savings to build something he never even attempted before, a private jet, the LearJet.
We have to get our balls back. Then everything else will fall into place.

lack of solidarity between people...
ironically, as things become more "global" people are becoming more segmented. If people could just come together and be reasonable, rational, occasionally selfless, etc...we would fix a lot of our problems.
It all boils down to power: money & avarice (economic power), xenophobia (political power), misguided and aggressive ambition (social power). People can't come together because too many want power and use propaganda and rhetoric/popular discourse to keep things out of focus. Drugs are not the problem with society...in most cases they are a consequence of what's wrong with society. Unless Bush is on crack (and I've often wondered), drugs are not the problem, they are a magician's sleight of hand (among a plethora of tricks), used to keep us from talking about what's really going on.

Yes there's something much worse going on. Russia and several other countries are aligning themselves with our enemies. Watch the news and look at who Putin is aligning himself with and then there's the Hugo Chavez issue. We are in serious trouble and are going to wake up too late to fix it.

I'd say it was the divide between rich and poor that's the trigger for most bad things

-our inability to accept that one day, we are all going to face one great judge to account for all we did whilst on earth. we all seem to have forgotten that the way we live our lives here on earth will determine whether we spend the rest of eternity in heaven or hell whether we like it or not. i would chose to lead an upright life no matter how difficult in order to enjoy some day in heaven- would you?
