If the show was designed to run for a year and the actor signed a contract for a year then that is all he is legally bound to work. If the show is then extended for a further year the producers would then have to go cap in hand with a new contract and re- negotiate with the actor, offering him a more lucrative deal to sign up. The actor is in no way obligated to sign the new contract. Take as a for instance the new Doctor Who on BBC1. They dropped a right boo boo only getting Christopher Ecclestone to sign a 12 month contract. He refused to sign another so we ended up with David Tennant who signed a much longer contract (a much better Doctor in my opinion)! Hope that clarifies things for you.

Usually an actor signs a contract for a certain number of season (usually 5). While a series can force an actor to remain until their contract is up, usually an uphappy actor is going to make everyone else unhappy, refuse to give them a decent acting job, etc. So it is often in the best interest of the show to let someone who wants off the show go.

But that has not alwas been the case. There have been many famous examples of a show holding an actor to a contract.

Suzanne Sommers was forced to do a second season of Three's Company when she wanted to leave. But because they feared she would make trouble on the set, they made her come in once a week and film a single scene - all by herself - in which she phoned in and said hi to the rest of the cast. Beyond that, she did not appear on stage.

While in many other cases actors have been allowed to leave with no problem.

So it depends on the show....

They usually sign a contract with the producers. It is up to the producers to decide whether to continue if the show's rating is good. If the actor's departure results in a loss of profit, the producers may file a lawsuit against the actor. On the other hand, if the rating is poor, the producers can cancel the show, replace the character or try something else.
