I'm US military...

Not speaking unnecessary ill of my brothers in arms, but I won't defend their actions either. In the military our codes and rules demand us to be held to a higher standard, but given the nature of our work, it's hard to get the right people to represent our nation in the military. "The right people" meaning people who will stay out of trouble and actually care about the wellbeing of our honorable host country.

Be assured though, that the men involved will face the consequences of their actions. Hopefully that will deter future misbehavior. According to what I know they will be tried under Japan laws, so you should be confident that justice will be served.

Although I believe in the 2% rule (That is to say that in every organization, whether it is Civilian or Military, there is that 2% that make the rest look bad). I believe they should be turned over to the Japanese authorities, stand trial by their law, and then when their time is up, face the music with the military. I would like to make one comment about the Japanese leaders saying the alleged rape can never be forgiven. The Japanese must have forgotton about Nanking, China where, with no retribution, no apologies, Japanese not only raped women, but murdered them, men and children. Used them for bayonet practice. There has never been an apology by any Japanese official for the atrocities commited by Japan during WWII. Again, this is not meant to excuse the actions of those Marines, because there is no excuse. I just think that the Japanese should look in the mirror when talking about forgiveness.

As far as the rapes happening to the teenage Japanese girls the military members should be executed for aggravated rape of a juvenal.. But there are some Japanese Girls over 18 years old that do not know how to say "NO"!!! These older japanese women need to learn how to say no! And they also need to have more self-estiem about them selves.. My advise to Japanese girls hanging out with American military is #1- know your worth #2- have confidence #3- learn to hold out on sex , if the guy really likes you he will wait.. trust me most of those young jar heads in Japan are not getting sex here in America the majority of them just got out of high school.. And my advise to all the horny young Marines if you cannot find a girlfriend in Japan.. DO NOT RAPE find some whores and pay (every base in the world has a place to buy sex)!!! If you are fortunate enough to date a Japanese girl make sure she is the legal age.. make sure you treat her with all the respect you would treat an American Girlfriend.. If she says NO then it means NO!!! It takes some personnel responsibility in those type of situations... I personally had a Japanese Girlfriend and I married her we are still married 25 years later....

The American soldiers do not rape and have not in any war. They know it is against military law. The modern Japanese soldiers do not rape either. They have military laws different from WW2. In WW2 it was legal, but now it is illegal.

The military is under a lot of stress.

Many military go out and have a few drinks in the local Japanese community. Most enjoy themselves and are good neighbors. But a few idiots thank because they are American they can do what they want.

Overall it just gives fuel to a small minority of Japanese who would like the security treaty to end. Most Japanese understand how beneficial it is to both countries to maintain this alliance.

I think all the Americans should get the hell out of Okinawa because they think just because they are in the army that they can go around doing what ever the hell they want! Oh, by the way, if I EVER see an American soldier doing something wrong or one fo them comes up to me with a ******* attitude towards me, and then tries something stupid like attacking me or something worse. Who shall I ******* report them to?? And will anything EVER get done about it?? I swear to god if any of them try anything on me then it will be the LAST TIME THEY EVER TRY ANYTHING ON ANYONE AGAIN!!!!! Big headed chumps!!!!

Police in Hiroshima prefecture are working with U.S. military officials to investigate the rape allegation, which the 19-year-old woman made to police.

The U.S. has about 50,000 troops based in Japan under a bilateral security treaty. Many Japanese complain of crime, pollution and noise associated with the bases.

The rape of a schoolgirl in Okinawa, which has the largest U.S. military presence, by three American servicemen sparked large protests in 1995.

How much longer do we have to endure this?

Rape happens all the time in Japan. Mostly by Japanese men. American soldiers just get more attention for their actions. It doesn't mean that the military is full of predatory rapists.

I changed my birthday trip, which destination was exactly Iwakuni, immediately after I heard about the accident. I certainly won't enjoy going there at least this week.
On the question:
1. From all questions I've read so far, I came with the conclusion that Japan has very wrong image abroad. People are interested not in a millennium old cultural assets, but in post-war Japanized American pop culture (animation and comics>anime and manga), in "smoking hot" Japanese girls and one-day wonders >so called J-idols. Yeah , and in AV actresses(?).
2. Extreme tolerance of Japanese. Most Japanese reaction to foreigners' misbehavior is more subtle, and only experienced people can catch it. Therefore, some people come to Japan and enjoy freedom they haven't enjoyed anywhere else. They decide that everything is allowed.Just a week ago a US girl was yelling "excrement!" in a Japanese fast food store and everyone just ignored her. Would she yell like that back in the US?
