I quit calling and visiting my sister. My wife and I would visit her periodically. At least once a week. She would not visit us though. When I stop visiting after so many years, she never called to find out why. So several years later I called. Yada, yada, yada. Gave her my phone number. She didn't call. Another year after, I called again. Gave her my phone number again. 2 years later I am still waiting. I have made it a point never ever to bother with her again. Like the old saying goes, you can choose your friends, but you can't choose your relatives.

All very good tales of family. My sister is my favorite sibling, partly because I was the one who basically raised her until I was 18. We have always been close and when I developed heart problems she forgot her family to stay in the hospital for the entire time I was in Intensive Care after my heart surgery. Can't ask for a better sibling. Although my older brother is an alcoholic and we are still close. He has everything life could ask for, married, kids a great wife and he is wealthy. I have no luck, never been married, probably never will be, no kids, no life, yet he tells me he envys me. I cannot imagine why. My sister finally got lucky and has been married for over 20 years to a great guy, but kind of stuck in his ways. We see each other now and then and she emails me when she has the chance. She adopted two of her sons kids and is raising them as her own, so besides working, the kids, her Lupus and her husband, she doesn't have much time for anything else. I will be seeing her for Thanksgiving. Wish I could show her I have a new girlfriend, but I don't have one. She has been after me to find one, says there is some one out there for everybody. Maybe so, maybe not. Oh well, she only lives 40 minutes away.

All my life I wished for a sister because I had 4 brothers and was the only girl.
6 months ago I got a phone call, guess what you have a sister!!!!
she is 65 and at the time I was 50. You can imagine the shock of finding out I have a sister especially that age. Older than my eldest brother!!!
She had contacted him first but he didn't want to know, so her sister contacted me!!
We established the facts and yes she is my sister. I went thru a whole range of emotions that surprised and shocked me.
I was hoping for a close relationship but sadly it has not turned out that way. She visited me once and I have been in to her work and we have rung each other a few times but nothing has really happened.
I would really like to make the effort to get to know her more. We are so different!! She is quietly spoken and I'm loud but I guess that needn't be a problem.
Oh well I guess I need to try harder.

No. Unfortunately. I will send her an email occasionally, but she has yet to answer back since right after my Dad died in 2005.
She never liked me when we were kids, and was always trying to "prove" she was better than me. Because she was my older sister (and my only one) I let her. It still didn't help.
Although when she was here before my Mom got so ill, she and I got along well, she still had that competitive streak in her. For example, I had gotten a small tattoo of a red dragon behind my left ear as a birthday gift from my youngest daughter. It is a fairly small thing and fits in the open space between the back of my ear and my hairline, with the tail trailing off a bit onto my neck. When my Sis saw it, she became determined to best me, I guess, because the next time she came to visit, after my Mom had grown so ill and was dying, she had the beginnings of a huge salamander running from between her breasts in front over her shoulder to the tail that wraps partway around her waist from the back. See what I mean about her need to be "better"?
And yet the competition between us has only ever been in her mind. I would be content if she just TALKED to me!

It's pretty evenly divided as to who initiates contact. She lives only a mile from me, but she keeps so busy we hardly see each other. Thank goodness for e-mail.
As kids, and even young adults, we were bitter rivals, but when I learned she was an abused wife, I set aside my petty feelings and rallied to her, supporting her decision to divorce, and being an ear when she needed one.
I love my sister very much, and I think she's a pretty amazing person. She is so skilled! She does quilting, and has made many many heirloom-type quilts as gifts for friends. She made me a lap robe of scraps from my grandmother's dresses.
She and her "new" husband also have a place on the river and she does most of the gardening (though he helps) there and here, and he does most of the cooking.
She's going to be 69 in November and I think he's 10 years older.

Well, I'm close to both...even tho' they're both in NY and I'm down in GA. Can't say that we appreciated each other growing up, but that's because of the age differences. Once we married and had families, that all changed.
I hear from them both very often....and they can say the same thing about me. We call, send cards, exchange e-mails, etc.
However, the two of them seem to have an issue getting together or calling each other....even tho' they don't live far apart. And it's not because of bad feelings. It just doesn't happen, and one is really upset by it. She often tells me that she sees and talks more to me!
This is has been going on for years and sadly, I don't think it's going to change.
Edit..PAD D...just read your answer. So sorry for your recent loss.

I have a younger sister and we are not close. We love each other but have very, very different lives. I have to do the calling and I write letters also. Her calls to me are rare but she writes wonderful, newsy letters. I'm the older sister and was married and gone from the family home when she was only 9 years old. The many miles between us, as well as the age difference, have never allowed us to be confidants or do things together.

I am the youngest child by 15 years. At 61 I still have two sisters, one 15 years older than I am and one twenty years older. I am close to the one 15 years older, don't get to see the other one that much because she lives in a different state, but we keep in touch by e-mail and occasionally the phone.

I have one sister; I'm 52; she's 48. We're close in terms of calling, even though we live 1500 miles apart. We probably split the calling just about evenly; however, there have been times when I did most of the calling, and other times when she did. In some ways, it's like any other friendship; each of us needs different things at different times, and so far, we've almost always been able to respect that.

I have 2 younge sisters, 1 is eleven years younger and the other is 19 years younger......I try to keep up with what they are doing, through my mother, but I do not talk with them on a daily basis....We are all at different points in our lives, so not much in common.....
I have a brother that is 2 years younger and I talk with him on a daily basis, either I call him or he calls me.....we are very close...
I live a 1000 miles from all of my siblings, so we do not see each other much......
